Football History
It wasn’t until the late 1800s that football began to be played with any kind of rules or organization. In 1876, representatives from Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Columbia met in New York City to establish some basic guidelines. These schools are known as the “Ivy League.”
The game of football was growing in popularity, but there was still a lot of disagreement about how the game should be played. In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt threatened to ban the sport because of all the injuries and deaths that were occurring. As a result, college presidents met to discuss changes that could make the game safer. They created the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States (IAAUS), which is now known as the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
The first professional football game was played in 1892 between the Allegheny Athletic Association and the Pittsburgh Athletic Club. In 1920, the American Professional Football Association was formed. This league is now known as the National Football League (NFL).
